Victorian Bathing boxes

More from the archives of my little holiday in December...
Another favourite aspect of the Morninton Peninsula area (where I grew up) is the bathing boxes. See those small colourful buildings beyond the boat masts?

Note also the sky in the photo above. I think the cloud formation is rather stunning... and the orangy pink sky in the distance.
This was the same night as my Mt Martha sunset shots

Here is a closer look at these lovely little pieces of (expensive) real estate. These colourful buildings are privately owned and were built for the purpose of changing into swimwear and storing beach items.

Some are painted in relatively subdued colours and others very bright .

Some even have little fences...

Some have doors basically opening onto the sand and others include balconies and more storage underneath.
All individual, but together create almost a work of art on the beach when viewed as a whole.

Happy Friday & have a wonderful weekend!!

  3. They are funny looking boxes! Each one is just slightly different from its neighbour - and yet they all have the same style of door.

  19. These are all fantastic shots mum; you have captured the scenery perfectly. When I look at the photos I can actually feel the atmosphere; as if I jump into the photo and am present in Melbourne. You have a gift to take the viewer on a journey just by looking at the photo. So, it only fits to say that a picture paints a thousand words - in this case, a photograph

  24. Oh, what cool things you can do when you have lots of money. These bathing houses are so bright and festive looking. I bet everyone has a grand old time when it really is swimming season. Liked all of your photos. They really did help giving someone who knew nothing of bathing houses a better understanding. genie

  26. This post was so original--don't know that we have beach houselets in that number in the U.S. Great idea if you can afford it, making coming to the beach less hassle. And you're right, taken together they're an artform. I'm off to admire your other sky shots now.
