S U N R I S E: Currumbin Rocks, QLD

The alarm sounds at 4:30am jolting me out of a deep sleep.
I look out the window, it's still dark outside but it won't be for long.
We must be crazy; who voluntarily gets up at this hour??

We get dressed, grab a muesli bar and a bottle of water.
It's raining lightly outside, threatening to ruin our plans.
As we drive towards the beach, the roads are almost deserted.

When we arrive at Currumbin, the only people in the carpark are the select group of photographers and the team from Gold Coast Tourism who have organised the day.
We walk along the sandy path to the beach, walk across the sand to the rocks.

The rain has stopped, the sky starts to clear, we wait...

As the sun finally peers above the horizon, its rays reach upwards...

It's clear to see why so many photographers love this time of morning...

For me, the ocean is so therapeutic. I could sit for hours and listen to the waves crashing. It's like music to my soul; both powerful and yet serene at the same time...

It's always hard to leave...

“A lesson for all of us is that for every loss, there is victory, for every sadness, there is joy, and when you think you’ve lost everything, there is hope.” ~ Geraldine Solon

What Makes You Happy??

Over at Focusing On Life this week, Deanna wrote a post titled Money Can't Buy Happiness... This got me thinking about my own happiness, and what really makes me happy.

True happiness does not come from financial status or material possessions... These things can come and go. You cannot put a price tag on true happiness.

I believe that:
Happiness comes from your attitude to life; how you look at life not only when circumstances are great but also when they are difficult.
Happiness is also directly related to how grateful you are.
I have never been in the situation of having a lot of money or possessions. However, every day I choose to be grateful for what I have. I am thankful that we are able to pay our bills every week. I am thankful that we can eat healthy food and have the things in life we need.
Basically I am grateful for God's provision for our needs.

I am grateful that I have a wonderful family; my parents, my 4 siblings, my husband, our 9 children, their partners, and my grandchildren.
Although it is incredibly difficult, I am grateful for those family members who have estranged themselves from our family. I pray daily for restoration of relationships so our family can be whole.
I am grateful for my wonderful friends, who constantly encourage me and keep me grounded.
I have people in my life (both family and friends) who encourage me to be the best I can, and love me for who I am. It is these people who I choose to enjoy life with. They are the ones I am blessed to share memories with; and it is those memories that bring me great joy!
Kirra Beach, QLD
I am surrounded by the beauty of nature, which I can see, hear, touch, smell and photograph. My photography allows me to capture moments of that beauty -- for that I am incredibly grateful!
I have my faith, which provides me with comfort, peace, joy and love. I am blessed!

So, in short, my happiness is a direct result of my gratitude.
The things that really make me happy are my faith, God's provision, my family, friends, creating memories, nature, and photography.

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY??

Smoky Currumbin Sunset

With lack of clouds and smoke from bush fires, I was unsure what kind of sunset we would get, if any this particular evening. This happens a lot when we drive down to the Gold Coast! The sky usually looks very promising, but by the afternoon the clouds have often disappeared. When you drive an hour for a beach sunset, you have to just enjoy the moment and capture what you can.

Here's what I captured...

I'm glad I've got LOADS of unposted images to edit & share during my recovery and rehab from surgery, otherwise I'd be even more bored than I already am!

Summer Sunset at Currumbin Alley

Last night I was looking back to when I started blogging, just over 3 years ago (4 July 2011). My first post was to explain the meaning behind the name of my blog.

Tuesday, 19 August 2014, marked 3 years since I bought my first DSLR (19 August 2011). It was then that my passion for photography and sharing the beauty of my part of the world began. It's been interesting watching how my photography has evolved and developed. It's been a lot of fun, some frustration thrown in, and great therapy.

I am extremely blessed to live in a sub-tropical climate, with relatively mild Winters. However it's been raining steadily for a few days now, so here's a Summer sunset I prepared earlier...

There are 1440 minutes in every day... 1440 opportunities to capture a moment of beauty.
What moment of beauty have you captured recently?

South East QLD Coastal Journey: Currumbin Beach & Currumbin Alley

Following on from my previous post, the next beaches north of Kirra Beach are Bilinga Beach & Tugun Beach. Sadly, I have no images of these beaches except in stormy weather. I really must take another trip or two down to the Gold Coast to catch up on the beaches I am missing!

Next after these beaches are Currumbin Beach and Currumbin Alley.

Currumbin Beach is the stretch between Elephant Rock (southern end, which has a great lookout on top) and Currumbin Rock (northern end).

From the top of Elephant Rock, there are great views in all directions. Below the rock is Currumbin Surf Lifesaving Club.
The rocks below Elephant Rock are also a popular fishing spot.

Looking north from Elephant Rock Lookout, you can see Currumbin Rock with the city skyline of Surfers Paradise. This particular day was a bit stormy...

Looking towards Currumbin Rock on a much finer day... When the wind is just right, this spot is a haven for kite surfers.

Looking back from Currumbin Rock towards Currumbin Surf  Lifesaving club and Elephant Rock

Such a beautiful day...

Looking through the rocks at Currumbin Rock towards Surfers Paradise city skyline.

Currumbin Alley is a surf break off Currumbin Rock. The Alley is one of the more famous breaks on the Gold Coast. Waves wrap around the point and towards the creek. It is exposed to perfect beginners conditions towards the creek and some fantastic right-handers towards the point.

Popular also for the recent craze; Stand Up Paddle Boarding.

City to surf...

Currumbin Alley marks the mouth of Currumbin Creek and provides the perfect angle to look west across the beach for stunning reflective sunsets.
