World Bird Wednesday: Bribie Island bird hide

On Sunday, my husband and I made a spontaneous lunchtime decision to drive up to Bribie Island (45 mins north) to check out Buckley's Hole bird hide. After sitting for a while (with no binoculars), using my zoom lens to scan the hide, we saw a few birds I hadn't managed to see or capture before.
A local birder arrived before sunset and told us of the sad events at the hide - a Lace Monitor (apparently around 16 foot) had been feeding on the bird life. There were around 25-30 Comb-crested Jacanas and now only an adult and two juveniles left.

And we only saw a few Australasian Grebes.
This first one was playing & splashing about. Quite cute to watch.

This one looks a little older (possibly an adult??) and was more sedate.

The local birders are petitioning for the removal of the Lace Monitor due to it's affect on the bird population in this protected area. It is also responsible for the loss of over 40 Moorhens and numerous nests with eggs of various birds being eaten whole.

Thanks for bearing with me and the ridiculous amount of images...

I like the photos of the Jacana especially. Buckley's Hole is a place I have often thought of visiting although it is a bit further away from me. Too bad about the Lace Monitor - that is certainly nature out of balance!

Is the monitor a natural predator in this area? Sounds like he's having a field day...

Beautiful photos, Liz. Great idea to visit this scenic area.

My mother In law lived in bribie island so I smiled when I read this post. Sadly she's in a nursing home now off the island but I'm very familiar with that drive across the bridge! I used to always like seeing that large Renoir like picture/ painting of the girl running in the field which is near the entrance.

It sounds as if the damage has been done for this season. If the Lace Monitor is not endemic then presumably its removal will enable the bird population to reestablish itself next year.

Beautiful photos Liz! The Jacanas are really cool and I love all kinds of grebes. Too bad about the Monitor. It seems like something would be done about that problem.
