One afternoon, last month, I arrived home and saw a familiar bird in our common grassed area. We have many birds in our large townhouse complex (and our backyard) but this was one I hadn't seen in the complex before.
In the afternoon shade of the many Macadamia trees, was a Sulpuur-crested Cockatoo picking up numerous Macadamia nuts. I wasn't aware at the time (but I did Google it afterwards) that these birds beaks are strong enough to crack the shells of Macadamia nuts. I also discovered that Macadamia trees are a favourite.

he's beautiful! so cool to see him free rather than in a birdcage here in the states!
Wow he can fly in my yard next Summer. What a beauty.
Nice Photos. Wow!
How cool is that? I like the ones where he is eating.

How lucky are you. Even better is that now it has found your tree you should have a friend..... lovely stuff here Liz.
What a great visitor, I'm always surprised by how big they actually are.
Sigh, I love birds....I used to have a mustache parakeet, but he passed away almost 4 years ago! I miss him!!
That is one bad ass bird Liz. Unfortunately we only too often see these in cages in pet stores :(
OMG -- how cool to see this in your yard! Sure beats the crap out of our sparrows. Lol.
They're free run free there? Oh my goodness, that's awesome! I'm thrilled to see this beautiful bird out & about rather than in a cramped up 2x2 cage! So glad I saw this post & LOVIN the yellow head feathers =)
More of your beautiful photos Liz that make me realise that my present cross-over camera is a compromise - albeit a compromise necessary because of my lifestyle and baggage restrictions.
beautiful as they are wouldn't they be the curse to the macadaemia nut grower?! Yes, I've always considered their beaks as a vice. No wonder they like macadaemias though...
nice shots. I only see this bird only in zoo here in India

Awesome shots of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Liz! I have only seen this bird in an animal show but they certainly are impressive, especially seeing the way it handles that nut! I really like the photo of the bird with the macadamia nut on top of its foot! Very cool!
Hi there - great pictures - these birds are not always the most popular when they feed on the loose bits of peoples roofs, but I do have a soft spot for them.
Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW.

Lovely bird to photograph..... well done Liz.
Greetings, Joop
Very nice images of a really beautiful bird!
Beautiful pictures of what I believe is a Macaw? My favourite is the last one of them. I's great with some environment in the form of trees and leaves in the background. I also like the slightly tighter crop.
Wow! What a beautiful looking bird. Very nice shots.
Love those head feathers! A very handsome bird!
Wonderfully Australian scenes - and your own yard in the city!
