Wild Bird Wednesday: Osprey Catch of the Day

My husband, Michael, had a full weekend rostered off and we had planned to do 2 day trips. On Saturday we drove down to the Gold Coast and on Sunday we drove up to the Sunshine Coast. It was a wild and windy weekend.
On Sunday, it was extremely overcast and the wind was chilly but we decided to drive up the coast anyway. We stopped at Bulcock Beach in Caloundra. There were over 20 people out Kite Surfing in the huge winds. My husband spied an Osprey above us, looking for fish. The conditions weren't ideal for bird photography but I gave it a shot, hoping I might capture something with the bird that close.

As you can see, the light was incredibly poor...

It was the most amazing experience, seeing the bird hovering above us, diving, coming back up, trying again.

Wonderful photo story Liz. You certainly manage to travel around a lot, so many great day-trip photo ops from Brisbane too.

I must agree with those before me -the light didn't matter so much because these shots are awesome! The one of the osprey with the fish is an amazing capture.
Terrific captures Liz!

Super shots of the Osprey Liz! Those first three close ups are incredible! The one that really grabbed me though was the shot with the three guys in the background. Was that bird as close to them as it appears?

Thats a fair sized fish! Good set of shots - if it had been bright and sunny the shots would have been even harder to get!

You list of back yard birds makes me jealous - on the Lorikeet in common with mine!

Thanks for linking to WBW.

wow Liz; you sure got lucky on the day!! Fantastic shots and I can hardly believe that second last one; the size of the bird compared to the men on the sand ------- they didn't even see it?! You must've been buzzing with excitement to see how well your pics turned out

I'm speechless with admiration for these shots. I've only seen Osprey in California and not particularly close up. We do have them in Scotland but I've never identified one positively.
