World Bird Wednesday: Australian King Parrot

I have been waiting for this link up since last Thursday!! On our drive up into the D'Aguilar Range last week, we stopped for a coffee at the J.M Jones Tearooms and what a treat... I looked up into the Jacaranda tree and saw these cheeky Sulphur-crested Cockatoos.

Then this beautiful male Australian King Parrot flew over to the Jacaranda. What a photographic treat!! It looks like he has been in a fight!

The markings & colours are so striking... The male has a brilliant red head and breast, green wings, dark blue rump and black tail.

Not long after, a young female flew over. The female's colourings are quite different. Dull green body and head, bright blue rump and red underbelly.

The striped feathers under the tail are beautiful!

Inside the tearooms was a bucket of seed... and so a whole family of Australian King Parrots joined us.

LOVE those blues on the rump! Such striking colours.

Sorry for the extremely long post... I just had to share all these. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.

Parrots are dressed in such beautiful colours! It's hard for me to imagine them flying wild. It sounds so exotic!

Great shots showing all the different colours of the king parrots, both male and female. They are quite splendid birds but, unless tamed by feeding, often shy and hard to get in good lighting. Well done.

Gorgeous, gorgeous photos Liz. Did you use a flash for any of them or was the light so good?

Beautiful shots of these gorgeous parrots Liz! That golden iris really sets off the other amazing colors of this species. I think the more subtle coloring of the female King Parrot is most attractive.

My eyes are kind of wide after just going through all these incredible bird shots you've shared. I'd really like to take the time to comment on several of them because you've done such a great and skilful job, but time isn't on my side this morning (you know that whole, you should provide your child with breakfast each day, make sure they're dressed and happy and then that other thing about being on time for work........) BUT I cannot leave without saying that your very last photo simply takes the cake - love everything about it.
