The second was the Sooty Oystercatcher (I'd only seen Pied Oystercatchers before this). I was on the rocks photographing the Terns and I heard a familiar call, so I followed the noise further around the rocks...
I've got my eye on you...

A great series of photos of the Sooty Oystercatcher. I especially like the one with the bit of food (shellfish??) in its beak.
Great photo series. The bright beak is a real eye-catcher.

Hi there - these are one of my favourite birds! Great set of pictures.
I have been lucky enough to be able to band some of these birds - in the hand they are like chickens!

Wonderful series of photos! Another bird I haven't seen - I wonder if we have them here in the US?
Beautiful series of this black and red bird! :) I have some problem with finding the names of the birds in my language: Swedish.
Greetings Pia
One problem for the layman (of which I am one) is that Oystercatchers can be so hard to identify unless you know where they are from because, apart from anything else, Oddly just before I left New Zealand last time I did a post on 6 May imaginatively entitled Oystercatcher which was of a Variable Oystercatcher (often known in NZ as the Black Oystercatcher (l. Haematopus unicolor) which I could not differentiate from your Sooty Oystercatcher. Your photos are, as always, superb.
Apologies. Putting in the HTML tags distracted me in the last comment. When reading please delete the words ""because, apart from anything else,"at the end of the first sentence.
Great series!
