Wild Bird Wednesday: Bush Stone-Curlew

The Bush Stone-curlew is an unusual looking bird. It is a large, slim, mainly nocturnal, ground-dwelling bird with large yellow eyes.

Bush Stone-curlews have an eerie wailing call which can often be heard at night.

Both sexes are similar. Young Bush Stone-curlews are similar in appearance to the adults, but are paler in colour.

Perfect captures of one of my favourite birds! Brisbane is very lucky to still have them around - I am skeptical of this being the case in 50 years time!

Such a fascinating-looking bird! Interesting that its nocturnal and has a wailing call in the night. I bet it's great to hear coming out of the dark!

We have these fellows in abundance up here in the north. They make a haunting sound when they call. I love their owl like eyes and feather patterns. Nice captured of these shy birds.

Looking good as always Liz! You certainly have a touch when it comes to taking pictures of birds! Your site is looking great as I haven't seen it in a bit. I feel so out of touch when it comes to all my friends websites. I guess my health has played a huge part in that! I think you understand there!!!Anyway I hope your doing well and that you have a great Easter!

Great shots - I saws good number of these on Magnetic Island - I think that their call would be a bit unnerving if you did not know what it was!

We are at the beach in a rental house - with many possums in residence by the sound of it!

Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne

Great shots of a really interesting bird. Do you remember the one we saw that other time, wandering around the carpark at the BP Service Centre in Coomera, late at night? xoxo
