S U N R I S E: Currumbin Rocks, QLD

The alarm sounds at 4:30am jolting me out of a deep sleep.
I look out the window, it's still dark outside but it won't be for long.
We must be crazy; who voluntarily gets up at this hour??

We get dressed, grab a muesli bar and a bottle of water.
It's raining lightly outside, threatening to ruin our plans.
As we drive towards the beach, the roads are almost deserted.

When we arrive at Currumbin, the only people in the carpark are the select group of photographers and the team from Gold Coast Tourism who have organised the day.
We walk along the sandy path to the beach, walk across the sand to the rocks.

The rain has stopped, the sky starts to clear, we wait...

As the sun finally peers above the horizon, its rays reach upwards...

It's clear to see why so many photographers love this time of morning...

For me, the ocean is so therapeutic. I could sit for hours and listen to the waves crashing. It's like music to my soul; both powerful and yet serene at the same time...

It's always hard to leave...

Moody Shorncliffe

Over the last 4 1/2 years since I bought my DSLR, I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with other photographers around south-east Queensland and New South Wales. It has been a great experience to connect with like-minded people and to learn a little more about shooting in certain conditions.

One thing I have noticed is that so many photographers are obsessed with "chasing colour" and anything less than extremely brilliant sunrises and sunsets aren't worth shooting.

I am passionate about shooting landscapes, no matter how stunning the sunrises & sunsets are. I am just as happy with the bright reds, oranges & yellows of an intense sunrise or sunset as I am with the pastel mauves, pinks and blues of a moody one.

I also love shooting during the day, capturing the contrasts of green landscapes & blue skies.

Below is a moody sunrise taken at Shorncliffe Pier back in 2014... I loved the pastel hues. This pier is currently being fully refurbished to preserve this slice of history.

Sunrise in the River City

One morning, a few weeks ago, I woke up at 4am to shoot sunrise along the Brisbane River. Many of you will know that I am NOT a morning person, so waking to shoot sunrise is a rare occurrence for this self-confessed "night owl"! We arrived in the dark and made our way to the river by torch light to meet a group of fellow crazy photographers.

Every time I have ventured out for sunrise, I wonder why I don't make the sacrifice more often. There is something incredible about watching a new day dawn... from total darkness, to 'first light', to the moment the sun breaks on the horizon!

5:11am

5:16am

5:18am

5:21am

5:33am

It's quite some time since I've been out with my camera!! That will definitely have to change as I am heading to the USA in 2 and a half weeks: Los Angeles, Seattle, Alaska crusie then back to LA & home.

Sunrise at the Point

I shot this sunrise in January 2014. I hadn't posted it yet because I wasn't happy with my editing process with the first images looking down the jetty. I have had a lot of time to go through some of my old images while recovering from my surgery and I came across these again. I had another play around and, to be honest, I'm still not entirely happy with the first 4.

I figured I should post them anyway. I will still have another play around with the RAW images in Lightroom 5 but don't think I will be entirely happy until I do a course in post processing.

(NB: The first 4 images show the very subtle changes that occur over 10 seconds after the sun breaks the horizon)

Have a great weekend!

Sunrise at Shorncliffe

A couple of months ago, I went on a sunrise shoot with a photography group I am a member of. It was the last couple of days of summer so sunrise is a much later (around 5:15am). When we got up at 4am the sky was very overcast and it would have been very easy to go back to bed as we had a 40 min drive to the location. As we drove, I was hoping the sky would clear a bit but with no wind at all, there wasn't much hope.
So an overcast sunrise it was! It was very subdued but I rather like it.

Unfortunately Shorncliffe Pier is closed due to being very unstable, so I wasn't able to get "down the pier" shots. Thankfully this wonderful piece of history is going to be refurbished over the next 2 years.

Golden Hour Sunrise

I love shooting at Golden Hour. The light is wonderful. Because I'm not a morning person, I usually shoot before sunset rather than around and after sunrise. I have shot 3 sunrises now and I must say, it's incredible to witness.

Wishing you all a wonderful Easter. Remember the reason for this holiday weekend.  ✝ = ❤️

SkyWatch Friday: Nudgee sunrise

Back in March, I photographed my second ever sunrise. It wasn't full of incredible cloud formations BUT it was incredibly beautiful just the same!
I was struck by the silence that descends just before the sun breaks the horizon. It was as if even the birds were watching in awe, just as I was...

2 years...

Possibly two of the hardest years of my life have gone by... On the 31st March 2011, my son Daniel walked out of our lives "forever" (his words).
In spite of the pain this has caused me and his siblings, I continue to love him more than words. I will never understand his decision to cut ties with his family and I long for the day he realises that family is everything. I still love him as much as I ever have and that will never change! And, although I do not know my 2 grandchildren, I still love them dearly.

I wonder how many times the sun must rise...

And set... before you come back into our lives, my son...
