World Bird Wednesday: Australian Pelican Antics

While out at Cleveland Point a few weeks ago (when the weather was nicer), I captured these Australian Pelicans.

Has anyone seen my keys???

I found one of their behaviours rather interesting as I hadn't seen it before... so much so that I Googled it when I got home...
I have named this beak stretching behaviour "Pelican Party Trick". The National Geographic calls it Pelican yoga. It looks more like a teenage party trick to me....

I still can't find my keys...

And just incase I missed it the first time... he did his Party trick again...

There's that lady with the camera again...

As you were...

These are so great Liz! Such animated pictures. I might just have to Google them myself and find out a bit more.

Great photos of the pelicans. They are always fun to watch and photograph. I hope you can see some more waders around Toorbul and Bribie Island. Check out the Kakadu Beach roost site on Bribie - the QWSG web site at waders.org.au has a full page about it.

Amazing photos Liz!
I once got attacked by a Pelican (it was in a zoo, not a wild one!). Can`t look at one again without a `twinge` of pain!;)

I can never see a pelican without thinking of Merritt's limerick:

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican,
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week
But I'm damned if I see how the helican!
